Our Neighbors’ Kitchen

By: Elisabeth Paulson

The finished product of this home in the Lake Claire/Candler Park neighborhood of Atlanta was truly a result of contradictions. The galley kitchen was part of the original home, while the vaulted extension housed an overly-engineered laundry room and mud room. We unified this space with cleanly-planed, clear-oil-finished antique lumber beams that look like they were born there.

We were lucky enough to work with the couple that calls this place home and get to know them a bit. They love cooking and beer and added their own distinct styles to the home: hers more farmhouse rustic, his more modern. A European drinking sink and fittings, handmade beer tapper, and chef’s kitchen spray faucet were only a handful of requests to make this dream kitchen.

Since the narrow space didn’t allow for an island, we incorporated a New York style deli counter instead, opening up the windows to the side yard.

The counter was built from a 110-year-old live edge white oak from the Emory University campus and formed the foreground for a truly unique quartzite wrapped bar and lacquered floating wall cabinets.

This project was definitely one of our favorites! Not only were the clients creative and possessed an incredible sense of style, but the finished product is something we’re extremely proud of. With those exposed beams, a custom bar, and a deli style counter, what’s not to love?

Pop Up Shop: Turkish Bazaar

We love Turkey, linens (towels, bedding, and throws), and supporting our neighbors’ small businesses. So when we got the opportunity to help our Turkish neighbors by offering our studio for a weekend pop up shop, we jumped at the chance! Come by Balance Design in Candler Park this Saturday and Sunday to find the perfect beach towel, bedding, or a treasured gift. See you there!

Color of the Year: Greenery

By: Shelby Adamson

Pantone has announced it’s Color of the Year for 2017, Greenery. Described as a refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings.

While we heartily embrace Pantone’s fresh approach to this life-affirming shade, and this hue in the spring does make us swoon, let’s not forget the vast range of colors in this family.

Let’s branch out and use rich colors on cabinetry to break out of the monotony of black/white/gray paint. Rich, deep navy was the cabinetry color of choice for 2016, but in 2017 we would love to see Vintage Vogue mixed with warm woods!

Avocado, Benjamin Moore.

If you tend to lean towards warm and organic design, this beautiful olive inspired green is for you. Plus, the best way to transform a boring space is a bold color!

Lime Sorbet, Benjamin Moore.

While Pantone’s pick is vibrant and energizing, Lime Sorbet is more soothing and understated.  A room with this hue feels airy and calm.  If meditating was a color, it would be this.

Green Smoke, Farrow & Ball.

We love the mossy, nature-inspired feel of this color. It’s cool and warm at the same time, and is a great design staple as a paint color, furniture piece, or richly knit throw.

Currently obsessing over this modern English kitchen with clean, simple lines, elevated by the richness of the materials and of course, the beautiful green paint.

We would love to hear your take on the color of the new year. Share your thoughts with us!
