Poet in Residence

Poet in Residence

By: Stephanie Andrews
Have you ever wondered what goes into choosing which projects get photoshoots?  Photography is expensive- time to style, in photographer cost, and time not working on other projects.  But they are important!  So important to show the alchemy of a relationship between a designer, her client, and the magic that can happen.  This article is about that story.

The living room includes a built-in banquette with so many books!
The project that I am going to share is with a client that we have worked with for over a decade.  First in a rental, then a bungalow in midtown, in their historic Druid Hills home which included a carriage house collaboration with Copper Sky Remodeling. Now, we are finally finishing up their mountain home.  We cannot begin to express how much we love these clients, not only for trusting us but also for the incredible collaboration that we have had with them over the years.

The iron doors in the family room lead to the backyard koi pond and fireplace.
What makes a beautiful home is the recognition of the souls that live there and the expression of their interests, loves, and personalities through that design.  I called this project “Poet in Residence” because she is a writer, a photographer, a philanthropist, and, well, just in touch with the world around her.  He is a businessman, a fisherman, an avid reader, a chef,  a philanthropist, and very into interior design. Together, they travel (a lot), and they always seem to be ready for their next adventure (Bhutan).  They also seek out the unexpected in design-primarily in art and vintage mid-century furniture. Much of the furniture that you will see has been found by them, and then we helped build the room around those special pieces.

The porch beckons to relax, take a nap on the hanging bed and simply enjoy the slow down.
You will notice lots of books in this home.  This is not just for show- this is the real deal!  Most of them have been read or are on the list to be read.  I think that you can learn a lot by reading the titles of the books in someone’s home.  In this case, every country of travel, political commentary, cookbooks, fish and bird species, design books, and that is just the non-fiction!

This global bedroom features art by Christina Kwan, accessories from Morrocco and Africa, lots of books (of course!), and cozy places to read and relax.
I am going to let these photos speak for themselves and share some of the thoughts that went into what you are seeing.   All of these lovely photos are taken by one of my favorite interior photographers, Mali Azima.  Mali’s ability to capture the soul of a space and create a calm insight into the lives of the people who live there is unparalleled.  To be on a photo shoot with her and watch her relentless attention to detail, all while listening to a diverse playlist, is so much fun, yet slightly grueling.  Our photoshoot with this client took 3 days!

I love the integration of the marble tile with the hardwoods.  The tub is much used and the plants are everywhere!
I will leave you with only these shots for now, as I will share more in the future.  I hope that your weekend brings you some time to relax and enjoy those moments that bring you joy.
Until next week,
Stephanie
