Top Five Pairings: Graham & Brown Wallpaper

By: The Balance Design Team

We’re constantly inspired by fresh and innovative wall treatments — wallpaper, murals, grasscloth, you name it! Each of us scoured Graham & Brown, one of our favorite wallpaper vendors, and chose something that sparked our imagination. Here’s what we like:

Stephanie’s picks

I imagine this Color My Heart wall mural and settee in a mudroom of a young family as a place to put on their shoes and drop their bags. There could also be a big basket for shoes and another for balls, gloves, and frisbees — perfectly placed for outdoor fun!

Elisabeth’s picks

Surround yourself with this super-hip palm wallpaper and escape into that summer reading list you’ve been neglecting. Perfect for a bright sunroom, this graphic botanical print pairs perfectly with this bamboo pendant designed by Edward Linacre. Made without glues or adhesives, this honeycomb-inspired light keeps your air quality as pure as the tropics.

Shelby’s picks

I love the idea of a young independent woman getting her first apartment in the city in a turn of the century building. She has great taste and can rock out her bachelorette pad in a feminine and impactful way. This fabulous gold polka dot wallpaper would be on the ceiling, with her walls in a white chalky paint. Under this amazing wallpaper is her coral tufted settee that she will lounge on, read, or make power deals while sipping her La Croix.

Danielle’s picks

Can I call this look “gruesome glam?” This black and charcoal skull print wallpaper is what my spooky little dreams are made of. But don’t get me wrong, I like a little elegance too! This gilded floor mirror is over-the-top in its style and size, perfect for making sure you’re dressed to kill.

Melody’s picks

The bold print of the World Heritage wallpaper gets me mentally prepared to delve into new lands while sitting in a relaxing hanging chair with an endless supply of books. It’s the perfect escape on a rainy day.

Deirdre’s picks

The Optimum White and Duck Egg wallpaper reminds me of the bold, sensual, and intriguing flowers of Georgia O’Keeffe. Paired with the antique brass of the Bryant Sconce, this is a match made in heaven.

Design Challenge: Bedroom Solutions

By: The Balance Design Team

Last week Shelby outlined her wish list for her master bedroom, including a headboard for her bed, new nightstands, lighting, and a vanity area. Each of us browsed her Pinterest board and created our take on a perfectly “Shelby” bedroom.

Stephanie’s Solution

Shelby has a fun-loving, adventurous personality that I wanted to bring out in her room design. The low upholstered modern platform bed lets the organic wallpaper create a bold statement wall. The vanity (which is actually a children’s desk) has ample storage for Shelby’s collection of funky and fun jewelry. Her accessory style inspired my choices for the vanity stool, pendants, and mirror, which all have touches of gold. And of course, I had to add a hand knotted rug that can be used in Shelby’s next home too!

Elisabeth’s Solution

I was inspired by Shelby’s love of texture and the perfect shade of blue in creating this Bali-tastic Bedroom Boutique. This water-meets-print wallpaper from Eskayel is sure to motivate Shelby’s creative world while the organic linear black and white rug grounds the room (literally). The classic floating shelf is simply smart, providing a platform for this modern woven marvel of a pendant. The canopy bed is a new absolute favorite of everyone at Balance Design. Finally, a beautiful challenge for Shelby: root plants in glass by taking a cutting and growing her own piece of art in water. I hope this design inspires art, nature, and light for morning and night (intentional rhyming included).

Danielle’s Solution

Keeping in mind Shelby’s request for a clean, sleek look, I focused on things she loves (with a little inspiration from her Pinterest board). The dresser currently in the room will be removed, making room for a printmaker’s drawer desk with a rounded rectangular mirror to act as a vanity/primping area. The drawers provide stylish space for jewelry, makeup, brushes, etc. An accent wall painted in her “spirit color” will pick up the blue accents in this vintage rug, which really pops against an underlying sisal. I took a small leap with the bed — Shelby requested ideas for a headboard, but I know from her Pinterest that she loves sleek, modern canopy beds. Replacing the mirrored nightstands with these crisp marble shelves keeps the room clutter-free (and provides the perfect perch for an aloe plant or two!).

Melody’s Solution

Shelby’s love of natural wood really inspired this space. Using walnut furniture accented with metal and glass creates a natural-feeling, put together look. This desk used as a makeup vanity will provide some much needed jewelry storage and a space to sit and get ready for the day with the large round mirror. The wall mural is an homage to her favorite color, teal. This effect is more subtle than full on paint, but gives enough color and impact to still make a statement. The glass shelves are 10′ deep so she will be able to use them as nightstands without the bulk. Even a piece like this lovely wood and glass terrarium would fit (bonus: these plants require minimal attention). Finally, the pendants for either side of the bed add the little bit of sparkle for Shelby that she brings to us each day.

Stay tuned next week when Shelby announces the winner!

Balance Design Holiday Wish List!

We’re getting into the holiday shopping spirit! Wanna know what’s on our wish lists?

Gift for the home: I love the lines of these Bruno Mathsson Eva Chairs for my living room. So sleek and well designed, I definitely need a pair of them.

Gift for the soul: Looking forward to a peaceful and rejuvenating vacation in Japan…just need to buy the tickets!

Elisabeth

Gift for the home: This painting knocks my socks off. “Sea Light” by Tommy McDonnell, a 60×48 multimedia piece, has the most unique straight-edge-meets-organic composition. Plus, he apparently does all his work on his beachfront terrace under banana palms. (Available at Gregg Irby Gallery, one of our local faves!)

Gift for the soul: Nothing makes me swoon more than a magnolia in bloom. I’m talking the enormous, evergreen, crazy-shady beasts that make up this land of ours. My homestead lost our century-plus oak tree this year and my hope is that the planting of a magnolia in its place will help with the melancholy of our empty front yard (though it probably won’t bloom for another 10 years).

Gift for the home: The blue coloring of this Kazak rug is unique to these type of rugs, and this one is pretty much a work of art for your floor. To me, it’s not about filling your home with stuff, but collecting beautiful pieces that will last.

Gift for the soul: This beautiful bag not only supports a local Atlanta business but it’s amazing quality! (Plus, I’m in desperate need of a sturdy bag for work that is light, has adjustable straps, and will hold everything from my laptop to my tape measure.)

Danielle

Gift for the home: I’m in love with the moodiness of the Temple Mirror. The cathedral window shape and antiqued mirror are calling my name in a faint, ethereal whisper.

Gift for the soul: Two things I can’t resist are Scandinavian art and teapots, and this Marimekko teapot is both! I drink tea with breakfast, lunch, and dinner year-round so this little stunner would be well loved.

Melody

Gift for the home: I’ve never seen anything quite like the delMare table. It’s truly a special piece–only 35 will ever be made. This table looks just like the ocean floor and would satisfy my deeply rooted love of the sea, while still living here in the city.

Gift for the soul: My boyfriend and I recently celebrated our 6th anniversary and family and friends have been asking the dreaded holiday question of “when are you getting married?” I’m personally in no rush, but (just saying) if it were to happen this holiday season, this would the perfect ring for me! I love the vintage feel of the band, and the unique rose gold finish.
